Reading Programs

Is your child struggling with decoding and/or reading comprehension?

Can he can do math calculation but is stymied by word problems?

Can she repeat back to you her science vocabulary words and processes but cannot seem to put all those details together to make a coherent whole?

Does he do well in school but have inexplicably low standardized test scores?

We have solutions for these students.

Our tutors have attended training workshops in both decoding and reading comprehension and have been using this training to help with reading issues that affect English, history, math, and science. Some of our success stories:

At One-on-One Tutoring, we design individualized programs that address students’ core difficulties in reading while teaching them how to implement new, effective strategies in their daily work.

First, we evaluate whether a student needs help with decoding or reading comprehension—or both—and create a program that addresses the student’s reading needs as well as their application to schoolwork.

We can schedule reading-based work during the schoolyear and/or in and around students’ summer vacation and camp plans.

For decoding, we are using SPIRE, an Orton-Gillingham-based phonics program that functions very much like Wilson Reading but is more practical for our students: because it is designed to flex and combine with other reading techniques, we can create an individualized program for each child (or young adult).

For reading comprehension, we are using Lindamood-Bell’s "Visualizing and Verbalizing" (VV), which teaches students how to read with understanding. VV is based on the idea that students who decode well but who struggle with comprehension lack the ability to integrate and connect parts in order to create mental representations for the whole. This revolutionary program offers a real solution for students—and their teachers and parents—who have long been frustrated by ineffective efforts to improve reading comprehension.
